MUM'S THE WORLD

MUM'S THE WORLD

It's no secret- mums are the easiest way to punch up autumn gardens with glowing color.

Drop in

Choose potted mums that are fully budded and just beginning to bloom, then slip them into sunny flowerbeds or containers.

Potted Partners

Mix mums with fancy foliage for eye-popping containers.A trio of mums, left, glows amid ''Ogon'' grass and ornamental Kale, with adash of Pansies Carnival Red peppers.

Garden Variety

Most mums varieties will create a mound of blooming color from 1 to 2 feet tall, which looks great at the front or middle of garden borders.Parner mums with fall perennials, such as goldenrod, asters, and ornamental grasses.

Hardy- To a Point

Though most gardeners buy mums in the fall and discard them after the bloom fade, some choose plants that are sold as ''hardy''. This term leads gardeners to think that the mums will return every year like most perennials. In truth, most hardy mums are short-lived perennials that may live for only another 1 to 3 years.
